Traffic Management Implementer
Course Overview
This SafeWork NSW course is for personnel who are required to set up Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) in accordance with approved Traffic Management Plans.
This program is suited to those who have traffic controller experience and wish to further their career within the traffic control/management industry
This course does not qualify a participant to control traffic with a stop/slow bat or boom gate, or to modify existing traffic control plans.
Prerequisites
- To be a minimum of 17 years of age
- To understand and speak the English language at a level that enables the safe performance and understanding of traffic control
- To obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Please visit www.usi.gov.au and ensure you have at least one form of identification
- You must have a CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (White Card) before enrolling into the course.

2 X 7 Hour days plus on the job assessments.

What is covered in the course?
- Identify safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities
- Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices according to a nominated TGS/TMP, to WHS and legislative requirements
- Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively
- Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP
- Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system
- Locate and apply required legislations, documentation, policies and procedures including documentation required for worksite projects and required traffic management
- Locate and apply required legislation, regulations, codes and procedures including Austroads Codes of Practice and WHS applicable to temporary traffic management
- Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements
- Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control
- Conduct an onsite check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards
- Plan for emergencies that may arise
- Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP
- Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type
- Maintain traffic incident reports
- Monitor traffic controllers
How do I enrol?
- Our Enrolment Form is required to be completed and sent to our office prior to receiving any course confirmation.
See Support Tab for our enrolment form. - A Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills test will be required for each student.
- All courses require the full amount to be paid prior to make a successful booking. Applicants will be advised of the amount at the time of the booking. Corporate clients, following a successful credit reference check, will be forwarded an authority to invoice on the term of a 14 day account. Facilities include Credit Card, EFTPOS or Cash. What do I need to bring?
- You must supply 100 points of identification, including (1) form of current photo identification, proof of NSW address, Signature & Date of Birth (see Evidence of Identity requirements below)
- You must bring your Safe Work NSW White Card.
- On first day of training you can wear casual clothing and enclosed shoes
- On second day and final assessment day, PPE must be worn (long pants, high-vis long sleeve shirt, hat/cap, sunglasses, boots – must be laced, steel cap and ankle high)
- Lunch (There is a café nearby and a regular coffee van visit. Free Tea, Coffee, Water & Biscuits are provided)
- Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the commencement of training
Training and Assessment
- theory questionnaires and activities

- $80 per person (within the Illawarra Region)
- $100 per person (outside the Illawarra Region)
Re-Assessment
Applicants deemed not yet competent will be provided the opportunity to undergo further training.
Licences and Certification
Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be receive a SafeWork NSW Statement of Completion (SOC) certificate which allows students to work in the Traffic Control Industry immediately whilst waiting for final assessment which will be conducted in a live environment.
The SOC is valid for 90 days only.
You will have 90 days to complete the final assessments (2 different occasions required) on a live site and supply a supervisor’s testimonial sign off and a log book with relatable documents such as Traffic Control Plans, Safe Work Method Statements and Risk Assessments to be able to submit to SafeWork NSW to receive your licence.
Applicants deemed competent at the conclusion of the live assessment will be provided with a Statement of Attainment with the following Units of Competency:
- RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace
- RIIRIS301E Apply risk management process
- RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
- RIIWHS302E Implement traffic management plans
- RIIWHS303 Position, set-up and program portable traffic control devices
Achieve Training submits your completion to SafeWork NSW for the issue of your traffic control card.

Cancellations and Withdrawals
In the event of cancellation or withdrawal:
- Students who give notice to cancel their enrolment more than 10 days prior to the commencement of a program will be entitled to a full refund of fees paid.
- Students who give notice to cancel their enrolment less than 10 days prior to the commencement of a program will be entitled to a 75% refund of fees paid. The amount retained (25%) by Achieve Training and Assessment Services is required to cover the costs of administration and resources which will have already been committed based on the students initial intention to undertake the training.
- Students who cancel their enrolment within 1 full business day prior program commencement OR after a training program has commenced will not be entitled to a refund of fees.
If Achieve Training and Assessment Services cancels the training course, and is not rescheduling then a full refund will be returned to the payer.
