Course Overview
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct backhoe/loader operations in Civil construction.
This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors.
Prerequisites
- To be a minimum of 16 years of age
- To understand and speak the English language at a level that enables the safe performance of high risk work
- To obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Please visit www.usi.gov.au and ensure you have at least one form of identification
- MUST SUPPLY YOUR OWN MACHINE.
Duration
2 X 7 Hour days.
Note: If proof of recent operation of a backhoe loader can be supplied (past backhoe loader ticket, 3rd party reports etc) a shorter course can be offered.

Price and Payment Terms
Course Cost $550.00 Warrawong (Course cost remains the same even when extra days may be required)
All courses require the full amount to be paid prior to make a successful booking. Applicants will be advised of the amount at the time of the booking. Corporate clients, following a successful credit reference check, will be forwarded an authority to invoice on the term of a 14 day account. Facilities include Credit Card, EFTPOS or Cash. What is covered in the course?
- Access, interpret and apply backhoe/loader operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions
- Identify and address risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- Identify, obtain and implement signage traffic management requirements
- Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities
- Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
- Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
- Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
- Continually monitor hazards and risks , and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
- Drive and operate machine, and modify the operating technique to meet changing work conditions
- Complete work plan within the operating capacity of the equipment
- Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms
- Conduct communication practices associated with transportation and lifting of materials
- Establish weight of load and ensure it is within safe operational limits of the machine
- Select, attach and apply slings and lifting gear in accordance with safe working load requirements
- Position and locate machinery to ensure stability to effectively shift materials according to job specifications
- Shift load safely and effectively
- Move load using hand/audible/communication signals
- Select attachment for the task
- Remove and fit attachment
- Test attachment and ensure correct fitting and operation
- Use attachment in accordance with recommendations and design limits
- Clean and store removed attachments in designated location
- Prepare backhoe/loader for relocation
- Move backhoe/loader safely between worksites, observing relevant codes and traffic management requirements
- Prepare machine for maintenance
- Conduct inspection and fault finding
- Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
- Process written maintenance records
- Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
- Process records
How do I enrol?
- Our Enrolment Form is required to be completed and sent to our office prior to receiving any course confirmation.
See Support Tab for our enrolment form. - A Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills test will be required for each student.
- You will be required to conduct mathematical calculations throughout this course

What do I need to bring?
- You must supply one form of photo identification.
- Wear comfortable, practical clothing and enclosed footwear (you will not be permitted in with thongs or open footwear)
- Lunch (There is a café nearby and a regular coffee van visit. Free Tea, Coffee, Water & Biscuits are provided)
- Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the commencement of training
Training and Assessment
Assessments will be conducted over the duration of the course – Knowledge, Calculations and Practical Assessments. All critical components must be demonstrated and answered correctly.
Re-Assessment
Applicants deemed not yet competent will be provided the opportunity to undergo further training.
Licences and Certification
This is a Nationally Recognised Training course and applicants deemed competent at the conclusion of the course will be provided with a Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO319E Conduct backhoe/loader operations.
A wallet sized competency card will also be issued.

Cancellations and Withdrawals
In the event of cancellation or withdrawal:
- Students who give notice to cancel their enrolment more than 10 days prior to the commencement of a program will be entitled to a full refund of fees paid.
- Students who give notice to cancel their enrolment less than 10 days prior to the commencement of a program will be entitled to a 75% refund of fees paid. The amount retained (25%) by Achieve Training and Assessment Services is required to cover the costs of administration and resources which will have already been committed based on the students initial intention to undertake the training.
- Students who cancel their enrolment within 1 full business day prior program commencement OR after a training program has commenced will not be entitled to a refund of fees.
If Achieve Training and Assessment Services cancels the training course, and is not rescheduling then a full refund will be returned to the payer.
Smart and Skilled
If you wish to apply and are eligible for funding through the NSW Smart and Skilled program, This training is subsidised by the NSW Government.
